What is KS1?
Key Stage One (KS1) is the first stage of primary education for children aged 5 to 7, covering Year 1 and Year 2. During this important period, pupils build on the foundations of learning from Reception and begin to develop key skills in reading, writing and mathematics, alongside a broad and balanced curriculum that includes subjects such as history, geography, art, and physical education. Learning in KS1 is designed to be engaging, practical and supportive, helping children to grow in confidence, independence and curiosity. This stage plays a vital role in preparing children for the next phase of their education in Key Stage Two.
How are lessons designed in KS1?
In Key Stage One, teaching and learning closely follow the National Curriculum, which sets out the subjects and skills children are expected to learn during Years 1 and 2. This ensures that all pupils receive a consistent, high-quality education, with clear goals in areas such as English, mathematics, science and the wider foundation subjects. Teachers carefully plan lessons to meet these national expectations while adapting activities to suit the needs, interests and abilities of their class. The National Curriculum also guides assessment, helping staff to track each child’s progress and provide the right level of support and challenge so that every pupil can achieve their full potential.
How will children be assessed in KS1?
In Key Stage One, children are assessed in a gentle and supportive way to help teachers understand their progress. Throughout Years 1 and 2, teachers regularly observe pupils’ work and use day-to-day assessments to track their development in subjects such as reading, writing and mathematics. In Year 1, children take part in the Phonics Screening Check, which assesses their ability to read and sound out words. At the end of Year 2, pupils may also complete optional national assessments (often called SATs), which are used alongside teacher assessments to provide a clear picture of each child’s attainment. These assessments are designed to be low-pressure and help ensure that every child receives the support they need to succeed.
